New OSHA Alliance Aims for Safety and Health in Western Pennsylvania’s Heavy and Highway Construction Industry
Enhancing safe and healthful working conditions for workers in Western Pennsylvania’s heavy and highway construction industry is the goal of a newly signed alliance between the Pittsburgh area office of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania (CAWP).
OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations and labor. CAWP, a chapter of the national Associated General Contractors of America, is a trade association comprised of over 70 AFL-CIO affiliated heavy, highway, utility, and railroad construction contractors throughout western Pennsylvania.
Under the alliance, OSHA and CAWP will work together to develop and deliver training and education programs for CAWP members. The training will focus on reducing employees' exposure to construction hazards, including work zone hazards.
The parties will also share information regarding CAWP best practices and publicize that information through outreach activities. Participation by CAWP members in OSHA's cooperative programs, including compliance assistance and the IUP OSHA consultation service will also be encouraged.
Signing the alliance were OSHA Pittsburgh Area Director, Robert P. Szymanski, CAWP President, Stephen M. Muck, CAWP Director of Industry Relations, Richard J. Barcaskey and CAWP Director of Safety, Education, & Membership, Jason M. Koss. For more information about this alliance, contact Jason Koss at jkoss@cawp.org or call CAWP’s offices at (412) 343-8000.
