CAWP Members Attend the CAWP / APC Joint Annual Meeting in Aruba
On February 1-5, 2012, over 120 CAWP members, representing more than 20 companies, attended the CAWP/APC Joint Annual Meeting at the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino in Palm Beach, Aruba. Attendees enjoyed networking while attending daily informative meetings and recreational excursions.
The Joint Annual Meeting began on Wednesday evening with a welcome reception, where attendees met while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the La Vista Patio and Vela Beach.
Thursday morning began with “The Two Minute Drill Approach to Winning Rapid Organizational Improvement,” presented by Clinton O. Longnecker, author and Stranahan Professor of Leadership and Organizational Excellence. Attendees learned skills necessary to drive improvement when the stakes are high and time is short. Spouses attended “Show Me What I Want to Eat,” presented by Leslie J. Bonci, director of sports medicine nutrition for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Center for Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Attendees learned how to pick the best eating plans for their bodies. In the afternoon, members participated in a snorkel sail, where they saw colorful fish, coral reefs, and explored the wreckage of the Antilla. The day ended with a hospitality reception sponsored by Cleveland Brothers Equipment Co., Inc.
On Friday morning, members chose between seminars depending on their roles in the company. Owners and principals attended a two part seminar presented by Brian Moore, FMI Principal. In the first session, “Critical Trends Driving the Future of the Construction Industry,” Moore presented attendees with the economic forecast for 2012 and the national and regional trends driving the construction industry. The second session, “Organizing for Growth - How to Build a Sustainable Organization for Good Times and Bad,” focused on strategies to create and organization that is sustainable in good times and in bad. Emerging leaders attended “Expanding Your Management and Leadership Skills as a Construction Professional,” presented by Andy Patron, FMI Senior Consultant, where they discussed how to manage the financial, marketing, and human capital elements necessary to running a company. That afternoon, members enjoyed a jeep safari tour, where they saw the ruins of the Bushiribana Gold Mill and the Alto Vista Chapel as well as volcanic rock formations and remote coastlines. Following the jeep tour, members attended a group dinner at the Papiamento Restaurant, where they experienced authentic Caribbean cuisine in a tropical garden setting.
Saturday morning was packed with APC Board of Directors meetings, which were open to all attendees. Bob Latham, APC Executive Vice President presented “Highway and Transportation Funding Industry Messaging and Branding,” Bob Blumling of Blumling & Gusky LLP presented “Transportation Contractors’ Legal Issues,” and “Risk Allocation Issues Report,” was presented by Geoff Clarke of New Enterprise Stone & Lime, Inc. and APC Risk Allocation Committee Chairman. The meetings ended with “Board Reports and Issues from Members.” Attendees enjoyed free time in the afternoon and reconvened in the CAWP/APC Hospitality Suite for refreshments and socializing in the evening.
