Over 600 high school students and adults, representing 18 different schools and seven counties, participated in the Southwestern Pennsylvania Construction Career Day on December 11th at the Western Area Career and Technology Center near Canonsburg. The event, which hosted a daytime and evening session, was jointly planned and promoted by the Constructors Association and its members, Trades, engineers and consultants, PennDOT, Pa Turnpike, education representatives, and others. The goal for the career day was to attract students and adults to the industry by exposing them to the opportunities available in the highway and bridge design, construction, and maintenance industry.
Activities consisted of hands-on demonstrations of concrete finishing, simulated crane operations, use of GPS technology, surveying, testing materials, and much more. Heavy equipment displays consisted of the following equipment: multiple backhoes and wheel loaders, dozer, crane, milling machine, snowplow, and a line painting truck. Inside exhibitors consisted of CAWP members, apprenticeship programs, engineering and consulting firms, PennDOT, Pa Career Links, colleges, universities, technical schools, and many others.
CAWP would like to thank all of its members who sponsored the event through financial contributions, donations, and those who volunteered during the event. This career day represents the Association’s ongoing effort to recruit a qualified workforce for CAWP members.
