CAWP in Midst of Busy Training Season
Even record snowfalls have not stopped the Association from continuing to provide members with a wide variety of training during the off-season. With everything from OSHA 10-hour courses, Flagger training, Increasing Productivity, Supervisor training, Crisis Management training to Rigging courses, the Association has been busy educating and training members in anticipation of the coming spring thaw and the start of the 2010 heavy and highway construction season. The following provides a highlight of this year’s training season.
Rigging, Slings and Fitting Seminar
The Rigging, Slings, and Fittings seminar took place on January 12 at CAWP. Bob Graham from the Crosby Group Inc. presented this training with classroom rigging calculations and demonstrations for superintendents, foremen, safety managers, field engineers, and other construction professionals.
Crisis Management for Construction
On January 14, Travelers Risk Control specialists presented a Crisis Management for Construction course to educate contractors on what to do to survive a construction-related crisis.
Flagger Train-the-Trainer Course
On January 21, CAWP offered a Flagger Train-the-Trainer course to assist contractors in complying with PennDOT’s mandatory Flagger Training specifications which require personnel to be re-trained every three years to comply with PennDOT guidelines.
OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Course
The OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Course was held on January 28. Employees at every level benefitted from this course, as they applied OSHA policies, standards, and procedures to the most common hazards found in construction.
Professional Truck Driver Defensive Driving Course
CAWP offered a Professional Truck Driver Defensive Driving Course presented by All-State Career instructors certified through the National Safety Council on January 22. The seminar covered defensive driving techniques that will help truck drivers avoid collisions and violations. The course also focused on personal responsibility and the consequences of the driving decisions they make, benefitting CDL truck drivers, non-CDL truck drivers (such as drivers of company tool and pickup trucks), and safety/fleet managers.
Improving Construction Productivity: An Easy Way to Increase Profits
James J. Adrian, Ph.D., PE, CPA, presented a course entitled Improving Construction Productivity: An Easy Way to Increase Profits. Centering on ways contractors can lower costs and increase profits through productivity management on the jobsite, the course highlighted topics such as the impact of productivity on time, cost, quality and safety; how increased productivity relates to higher profits; a multi-step program for effective supervision of productivity; and productivity best practices. This course was held at CAWP on February 11.
Heavy/Highway Construction Supervisor Training Program (STP)
CAWP offered AGC's Heavy/Highway Construction Supervisor Training Program specifically for heavy/highway field supervisors, foremen, journeymen aspiring to become supervisors, and others who work with field supervisors such as estimators and engineers, on March 1-3. Tom McCrackin presented the course again this year, focusing on topics including leadership, motivation, communication, problem solving, cost awareness, planning and organizing, production control, accident prevention and loss control, and project documents.
DOT Safety Compliance Seminar for Drivers
CAWP presented a DOT Safety Compliance Seminar for Drivers of Commercial Motor Vehicles. This seminar benefited drivers of CMVs (over 10,001 pounds) by providing information on current DOT safety compliance issues, a new initiative titled the CSA 2010, and what to be prepared for during a PA State Police Motor Carrier roadside inspection.
2010 Construction Market Symposium
CAWP held the 2010 Construction Market Symposium on March 5. During this half-day symposium, representatives from each PennDOT district in western PA, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Allegheny County Department of Public Works, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alcosan, Allegheny County Airport Authority, City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works, and the Urban Redevelopment Authority discussed projects they have available for bid in 2010.
