CAWP Sponsors 2011 Summer Construction Camps
Over 40 seventh and eighth graders participated in the 2011 Summer Construction Camps sponsored by CAWP. The camps, which were held at the Central, Eastern, and Northern Westmoreland Career and Technology Centers, took place between June 20 and 24. During the weeklong construction camps, students participated in hands-on, construction-related projects and instructional activities. The camps culminated in field trips, coordinated by CAWP, to several apprenticeship schools.
All of the students had the opportunity to visit the Western Pennsylvania Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship site, where they learned about the skills required to be a heavy equipment operator. Students enjoyed the opportunity to work with an instructor to operate various pieces of equipment. One group of students also visited the Greater Pennsylvania Regional Council of Carpenters Training Center, where they learned about the heavy/highway, commercial, and pile driver training at the apprenticeship school.
The Construction Camps were sponsored by the Westmoreland County Building and Construction Industry Partnership, Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board, CAWP, the Western Pennsylvania Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship Training Program, the Greater Pennsylvania Regional Council of Carpenters, and Central, Eastern, and Northern Westmoreland Career and Technology Centers. These construction camps represent CAWP’s ongoing efforts in workforce development.
