Association to Hold Seminar on E-Verify Program
This December, the Association will be joining with the Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania in offering a seminar on E-Verify. The seminar will be held on an Internet-based system that allows an employer to determine the eligibility of an employee to work in the United States. For most employers, the use of E-Verify is voluntary and limited to determining the employment eligibility of new hires only. But contractors with a direct federal contract are required to enroll in E-Verify when they are awarded a federal contract or subcontract. Also, recent legislation in the Pennsylvania General Assembly requiring contractors to utilize E-Verify came very close to becoming law, and is expected to be reintroduced again in the near future.
During this program, those in attendance will learn what every employer should know about the electronic employment verification system including:
- The pitfalls of voluntary submission to the E-Verify program
- How federal contractors are troubleshooting E-Verify issues
- What changes have been made, what problems have been solved, and what problems remain
- How the government is increasing its worksite enforcement activity
- Best practices for avoiding worksite enforcement actions
- How to find out if your organization is being targeted for an audit, and what agents look for in an audit
- A company’s legal recourse if ICE agents arrive on site
- Recent government actions to fine employers for immigration violations
- How the government's new audit strategy impacts the current debate on making E-Verify mandatory for all employers
With increased scrutiny on employers, knowledge is power, and it is critical that businesses are aware of their responsibilities, even if they do not employ foreign workers. Join attorneys Marc Furman and Eric Kimbel, attorneys from Cohen Seglias Pallas Greenhall & Furman PC, as they address the following:
- Proper I-9 Form compliance
- The most common errors that can result in ICE scrutiny and fines
- Up-to-date legal requirements that employers must abide by for Form I-9 and E-Verify
- Which companies are required to comply
