CAWP/H2AP Safety Bulletin #8-12
February 13, 2012

TO:                CAWP Contractor Members and H2AP
FROM:          Jason Koss, CSP, Director of Industry Relations
SUBJECT:     Crane Assembly / Disassembly Course

Complying with OSHA’s Crane Standard

Did you know:
As of November 2010, OSHA requires crane assembly / disassembly (A/D) operations to be supervised by an A/D director who meets the criteria for both a competent and qualified person.  Prior to beginning A/D operations, the A/D director must review the A/D procedures and instruct the crew on their tasks and the hazards of the operation.

To ensure A/D directors and mechanics are both safe and compliant with the regulations, the Operating Engineers developed a training program on the assembly and disassembly of a crane.  The program is ideal for A/D directors, lead mechanics, and safety/equipment professionals who are responsible for crane management.

Topics will include:
 - Overview of OSHA’s crane standards dealing with assembly / disassembly
 - Review of several crane manufacturers’ assembly / disassembly procedures in crane manual
 - Boom rigging and assembly procedures (hands-on)
