Peak Employment for Operating Engineers Retirees Under 65 Ends October 31

Each year, the Trustees of the Operating Engineers Local #66 Pension Fund have the ability to designate a time period when a retiree under the age of 65 can return to work during a period of peak employment, while continuing to receive a monthly pension.  In the past, with the amount of construction work at a peak, this time period has gone well into the fall months.

However, the Pension Fund has notified the Association that this year’s peak employment period will be ending on October 31, 2020.  This means any retiree under the age of 65 must cease working by the end of October or risk a suspension of their pension benefits.  Retirees over 65 are only permitted to work 40 hours in a calendar month without jeopardizing their pension.

In the event your company has a retiree that wishes to continue to work beyond October 31, they must send a letter to the Fund stating that they wish to stop their pension effective November 1, 2020.

The Fund has advised the Association that while stopping a retiree’s pension is possible, it is a complicated process, and the retiree will have to wait four months to restart their pension.
