The current surface transportation law – the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act – expires on September 30. During the pandemic, the Association has held several online meetings with local Congressmen and Senators advocating for a long-term reauthorization. However, with the upcoming election, it has become clear that a one-year extension of current law is the most likely outcome, as time is running out and both chambers of Congress remain very far apart on their respective bills.
As a result, yesterday, the Association and the Unions sent this letter to members of the western Pennsylvania congressional delegation, urging them to pass legislation before the end of this month that includes the following:
- A one-year extension of the current surface transportation law with increased investment levels;
- $37 billion in emergency federal funding for state departments of transportation, and;
- Provisions to ensure solvency of the Highway Trust Fund for the duration of the extension at a minimum.
The Association will continue advocating for needed transportation funding, and will keep you informed of any updates.
